Alan Buckley
Alan Buckley was born in Wiltshire in 1965, and brought up in Birkenhead. He has lived in Oxford since 1984. He was a musician for over twenty years before starting to write poetry in 2004. He has worked extensively in the fields of mental health and substance misuse, and is currently one of two poets in residence at HMP Grendon in Buckinghamshire, the UK’s only fully therapeutic prison.
His poems have appeared in a wide range of magazines, including Magma, Smiths Knoll and Orbis. He is committed to exploring creative ways of engaging audiences with live poetry, and has performed his work in a bus, a science museum, and a high-security prison, as well as more conventional venues. In 2006 he put together an hour-long show (“Rhyme and Reason”) with fellow Oxford writer George Roberts, which had its first performance at the Live literature Arena, the official fringe to that year’s Oxford Literary Festival.
