Andrew Philip was born in Aberdeen and raised near Falkirk. He lived in Berlin for more than a year and a half before studying linguistics at Edinburgh University. He now lives in Linlithgow and works part-time for the Scottish Parliament’s Official Report.

His pamphlet, Tonguefire, was published by HappenStance in 2005 and his poems have appeared in various publications, including ibid, Chapman, New Writing Scotland and Sou’wester (USA). His poem ‘A Rough Guide to Monday Morning’ was featured on a Scottish Book Trust national poetry day postcard in 2002.

Two of his Scots translations from Rilke were published in The Smoky Smirr o Rain and his adaptation of an excerpt of Blind Harry’s Wallace into contemporary Scots—commissioned and broadcast by Radio Scotland—appeared in The Wallace Muse.

In 1999-2000, he coordinated the Scottish Poetry Library’s project to develop links between members of the Scottish Parliament and contemporary Scottish poets, and compiled Variations on a New Song, a pamphlet of poems from the scheme.
