Adham Smart

Adham Smart has spent half his life in Egypt, moving to England in 2000. He has a love of languages and writing, but developed a passion for poetry after unexpectedly being selected as a winner in the 2006 Foyle Young Poet of the Year Award. Although his winning poem, ‘Banged Up’ was an ironic series of limericks on the subject of detention without trial, his poetic themes vary from word-play and cheap puns to more serious subjects such as war and nature.

To date, the only publication Adham has featured in is the collection of the winners of the 2006 FYP Award, Radio Seventeen. However, he frequents the Poetry Cafe in London with friends made at the Arvon Course. He admires the poetry of the other winners of the 2006 Foyle Young Poets, and the judges, Paul Farley and Kate Clanchy. His other influences include Wilfred Owen, Percy Shelley, WB Yeats, Ogden Nash and Rudyard Kipling.
